Living with brachymetatarsia

Hey everyone,

I decided because I have so much time on my hands, that I should write a blog to help those who are struggling with Brachymetatarsia. I found with my research, that there wasn't that many entries out there telling people what it is like to live with it, and what the surgery is like.

For the past nine years I have had to deal with a deformity called Brachymetatarsia. For those of you that don't know, it is a condition where a metatarsal bone doesn't develop in (most commonly) the 4th toe, making it shorter than the 5th. This deformity is fairly uncommon, and correcting it is a difficult process. People with this deformity generally develop psychological problems, as it begins to become noticeable around the age of 8-9, when kids have a tendency to tease those who are different. Because of this, we force ourselves to hide our feet, restructuring our personalities to become someone we are not.

This is my story...

I was happy as a kid, always outdoors swimming, I loved swimming, and my feet were the last thing I cared about. One day someone else pointed out that my feet looked weird and started talking about it behind my back. I became self-concious and developed anxiety, refusing to enter any activity that would reveal my feet. This consisted of lies upon lies and eventually the reoccurrence of reasons why I couldn’t come over, or go swimming, lead to my friends giving up on me, moving on and finding new people to spend their time with. I did little to prevent this isolation, I only saw it as preserving what was left of my inner strength, rather than an opportunity to share my insecurities and move on.

I didn't allow myself to wear nice clothes, creating a false image of who I was, because the only shoes I would allow myself to wear were converse or closed toe, which had to cover a specific amount of my foot. Summer was hell but winters made me feel more comfortable and I would start acting more myself around others.

My parents took me to see numerous doctors, all refusing to perform any form of "cosmetic surgery", they said that my feet weren't doing any harm so they wouldn't touch it, however, the psychological pain was horrific. We had found doctors in America that performed the surgery, but the duration of recovery was too much to consider getting it done. I had lost hope and my depression became worse. Then one day my mum found a surgeon in Sydney, that did this surgery, we arranged an appointment and I am currently on my recovery for my second foot, and would like to share my experience with people struggling to deal with this just like me.

I would like everyone to know that I didn't get this operation done just because of how my feet looked. I experienced an immense amount of pain from just walking, and found almost every shoe uncomfortable. I would get blisters on top of blisters and shooting pains in my feet. This became unbearable because I loved to exercise and couldn't because of the pain.

I have attached some images of my feet before the operation.
The top view shows the odd appearance.

The side view shows how the toe is pushed above the others, this makes it prone to blisters which hurt sooo much. I also noticed that after any form of exercise I felt pain in my foot, because my toe would be pushed up so much all the muscles and bones readjusted.

  1. Hi! I just found your blog. I'm also in Australia and you're the only other Aussie I've found that has blogged about their experience. What kind of surgery did you have? Did you go for the external fixator? I'd love to hear how you're going with it. I also have a blog. Follow me on http://byebyebrachy.wordpress.com/. Take care :)

  2. Hi! sorry it took me so long to get back to you!
:) i had/am having the external fixator option. I was extra unlucky and have brachymetatarsia on both feet. Did you go with the external fixator? Who is your surgeon? I had almost lost hope in finding someone to do my surgery and was told he was the only one in Australia!
hope everything is going well for you!

  10. Hi Nadia,
Thanks for this blog. I also noticed at 8.5 years old that something was wrong with my toes. My brother asked me one day what was wrong with them. Since then, the only people I was comfortable with showing my toes was with my family. As I got older, a few chosen friends saw my toes. Of course, they bust out laughing and made jokes. After that we moved on. Anywhoo, I will be 44 in April and I have decided to have the surgery. I will be doing one foot at a time and it will be with the extender. I am scared, excited, and relieved. I WANT to wear sandals. Before that surgery, I will be having my heal spurs treated. I am so relieved. This will be a great birthday present for myself. I am from America and I commend you on your thoughtfullness in writing this blog. Stay blessed, stay well, and stay sweet.

    1. Hey Michelle!
I am so sorry I have not replied, I have been so busy with university that I completely forgot about my blog.
Have you had the surgery yet? How are you coping with everything?
I can't wait for you to be able to wear sandals, it is such an amazing feeling not having to worry about what your feet look like and just going barefoot!
:) I am so so sorry again.
      Hope you are well!

  11. Nadia, thank you so very much for taking the heart and time to write this blog. I only discovered in November that I was not the only one with this. I also have it on both feet - 4th and 5th. Words cannot express how much I can relate to how you described your childhood in relation to your feet.... you may as well have taken the words right out of my head. Brings me to tears reading it x

I live in Australia and could not/cannot find a single thing about Brachy online. Everything I found was all in America. At this point I was willing to travel *anywhere* to have this done. I have now found an orth surgeon who is very excited to do this surgery for me. He is going to present my case to a group of orth surgeons who meet once a quarter in WA to get everyone's expert opinion. How awesome!

Anyway, I am looking forward to reading through the rest of your blog here... thank you so much again x

  13. Hi Nadia,
I am from India 30 years old female, have this condition on my left foot, causes a lot of emotional stress for me if not physical pain. I am very active with exercises etc. No-one here in India is ready to take up such surgeries and people just want to let it go as it is. Not sure what to do.

  15. nadia, thanks for your blog, i think you already forget about your blog because your last post is in 2013. Your blog and other blogs about this deformity was quite informative. Until November 2015, i thought i was the only one in the world with this deformity in my fourth toe of right foot. Oneday i searched short toe accidently, So many blogs and including yours showed up, i was like crazy to read all the cases and relieved that i have friends all around the world with brachy. I exactly had been through same emotional and physical stresses and it did affect my past relationships too. I wish i had known there is a method to fix it. I am 38 years single mom now. In my country, ortopedics & doctors do not have a clue about brachymetatarsia, so i searched through internet. In the USA the surgery costs 45000 USD without insurance, so i did not have this money, i live in Asian country so i searched Thailand and South Korea. I found an article from medical journals which was written by Korean doctors so I wrote email send my foot photo and x ray. I went to Seoul on 29 April, 2016 and had my surgery, one stage procedure. I am still recovering now. Total cost including travelling is around 7000usd. This is a common operation in South Korea and my doctor has performed 400 cases. I hope my experience will help anybody who has a brachy toe but their country doctors do not perform the operation

  17. Hi there. I thought I'm the only one in the world that who have this kind of foot. Until I watched a video (just recently) in YouTube who features celebrities with deformities. And one of them is Jennifer Garner. She had the same situation
As mine. And as of today I'm still shock. I can't believe that I'm not alone (haha). Well if you ask me how's my life now. I'm 23 and I'm married now. I became a mother when I was 18 and now I have 2 sons. (Sorry for my bad grammar) I already accepted my life with this kind of deformity and I'm thankful that I have families and friends who accept me me for who I am.
